Every summer the calls come in: the fireplace nobody has touched since March suddenly smells like a campfire, or worse. Two things changed — the air got humid, and the house started pulling air down the chimney instead of up it. Fix those and the smell goes.
Why the smell appears when burning stops
Creosote and soot are tar-family compounds, and tar smells strongest warm and wet. Des Moines summers deliver both: humid air sinks into the flue, moistens months of residue, and the odor rides the airflow into the room.
An uncapped flue makes its own contribution — every thunderstorm sends rain straight down onto the smoke shelf, where it soaks into the buildup and sits through August.
Why the house inhales through the chimney
With the AC running and windows shut, every exhaust fan — bathroom, kitchen, dryer — pushes air out of a sealed house. Replacement air takes the easiest path in, and an open flue is a highway. The chimney becomes the house's intake vent, odor included.
Standard throat dampers leak even when closed, so 'the damper is shut' rarely settles it.
The fixes, cheapest first
Confirm the damper is fully closed and ease off the exhaust fans; if the smell fades, you have proven the pressure mechanism.
The lasting combination is a sweep to remove the odor source, a capped flue to stop rain and animals, and a top-sealing damper — a gasketed lid at the top of the flue — to stop the airflow entirely. For chronic summer smell, that damper is usually the piece that ends it.
A tray of activated charcoal on the smoke shelf helps mop up what lingers afterward. It is the last step, not a substitute for the others.
If it smells like animals
Sometimes it is not tar at all. Uncapped Des Moines flues collect nesting birds and raccoons every spring, and what they leave behind announces itself by July. The fix is the same sweep-plus-cap, with the screen keeping the wildlife out for good.
If you only do one thing
Cap the flue. It stops the rain that feeds the smell, the animals that add to it, and most of the summer airflow that delivers it — and it is the least expensive piece of hardware on the chimney.
Then, when the smell has been strong for more than a season, add the sweep and the top-sealing damper and be done with it for good.
