A camera inspection is legitimate when the flue history is unknown, after a suspected fire, or at a sale. Cap replacement, crown sealing, and flashing work found during the visit are real too — but they should arrive as a separate written estimate with photos, decided on your schedule.
The bait pattern is the opposite: a $69 coupon sweep that becomes a four-figure repair pitch at your kitchen table. Around Des Moines as anywhere, the too-cheap price is the expensive one.
Getting comparable quotes
Match the scope before comparing numbers: sweep only or sweep plus inspection, how many flues, stove pulled or not, cleanup included. Most shocking price gaps are scope gaps.
Then weigh the evidence habit — a company that photographs the flue before and after invites you to check their work. That habit travels with honest pricing.
What to have ready when you book
Fireplace or stove, when it was last cleaned, what you have seen — smoke, smell, flakes, anything up the flue with a flashlight — and how the roof is accessed. Clear answers get you a realistic number instead of a range wide enough to be useless.
And if a price sounds too good against every other quote, it usually costs the most by the end of the visit.
